Beginning May 27, the day after Memorial Day 2025, we will have a daily hour with no music from 8-9am to create a more welcoming space for folks who are are sensitive to loud environments.
Why are we doing this?
Many people experience noise sensitivity, and it can be especially problematic for those who are:
– our elders
– neurodivergent and/or live with anxiety
– autism spectrum disorders
– sensory processing disorders
– PTSD
– or experience Cook County summer season overload and want to shop in a quiet zone
We’ll still need to stock shelves and use the paging system but we’re hoping no music helps to create a calmer shopping experience for everyone – even if none of the above apply!
How can you help?
– Tell folks you know who may benefit
– Help educate: not all disabilities are visible
– Keep phones on silent
– Use your library voice
– Avoid loud conversations or phone calls
